Dominican Volunteer
My name is Marlene and I’m currently doing some volunteer work with the Dominican Sisters in Honiara, Solomon Islands. I am a retired teacher, having last taught at San Sisto, Brisbane for 14 years.

I first met the Sisters here in 2016, on a brief visit to Honiara. I returned for a few weeks in 2017 and am here again for a three-week stint. While staying with the Sisters, my main purpose is to help those who are studying with their assignment work, particularly with English expression, but my other duties are varied, from driving people to the markets or to their places of study, to organising the Sisters’ book collection. I also hope to visit the universities while I’m here, to gain a clearer picture of courses which may be open to the Sisters.
