I look on my ministry at this time to be there for all our Sisters, especially the Sisters in Aged Care facilities. There is no pattern as each day brings its own needs. When I visit St Mary’s Villa, Concord, I hope to spend time with each of the four Sisters, but that is not always possible. Sometimes it is talking about news or the weather with the Sister. I find if I bring the iPad and share scripture passages and prayers it can be helpful. It is also useful for photos of gardens, parks or flowers to stimulate conversation.
When the sister is in pain, discomfort or depressed, it is just being there and sharing the silence with them. It can be a real comfort.
I also visit St Vincent’s Care at Auburn where there is one Sister. One duty required is a game of cards which is often more conversation than cards! Over the years, I have met many of the residents so make time to greet them along the way.
Another part of my pastoral care is to the staff. It can be in praise of their work or a listening ear to their troubles.
I hope my pastoral care is reaching out to my community and those people I meet on the streets.
