Floods in Tenaru
St Martin’s Rural Training Centre is located in the Eastern part of Honiara, Guadalcanal Province. We train students, both boys and girls, 18 years of age and above. This year our number of students is increasing. It was also the first RTC started in the Solomon Islands founded by the late Br George SM.
On Friday 9 April, we had very heavy rain and strong winds in Honiara. After a few hours the wind stopped but the rain continued till the next morning.
We had a flood which was worse than the last few years. It really caused a disaster to the school, especially staff houses, school surroundings and the school farm.
The farm supplies the school with an income and at the same time their daily meals. Floods are one of the yearly challenges for the Centre as they always disturb the school farm and making them depend on goods from the shops and market.
