An Aboriginal man gave a welcome to country which included a welcome to refugees. This was followed by Bishop Vincent Long speaking about his life as a refugee: fleeing Vietnam with his family as a teenager, living in a detention camp and being welcomed into Australia at a time when the government policy was very different. Zaki spoke of his experience as an Hazara refugee from Afghanistan. Zaki was ten years in detention, formal and in the community, while on a Temporary Protection Visa. He thanked the current Government for giving him residency. He’s now working for Amnesty International.
